Massing Development & Model

For this study I have created a model based on my previous model that I created for my Program . This model doesn't derive much from my previous model because it represents what I 'd like my program to develop into. Basic concept for my model is that I 'd like my Spa to be the primary facility and hotel being the complementary part to the spa.

I'd like to also point out that this model isn't to scale.

  1. Very clearly defined model. Good start. The compositional duality expressed in black and white is very helpful for reviewers, and will be very useful to you as you develop your concept.

The relationships, however, are so exclusive that I wonder whether you'll be able to wring much compositional or experiential meaning from it. If the program elements can be arranged to more obviously support each other or interrelate on some levels, the form and meaning can be more complex and more interesting to develop.

Here's a thought: Why not wrap the spa garden with the hotel? Or imagine carving the spa from the center of a hotel mass; in effect using the hotel functions as a thick wall to protect the spa.

The perforations you've suggested in the spa wall might be developed into openings that penetrate the hotel in strategic ways, linking spa, hotel and context.

Also, I think that economic logic suggests the hotel should be bigger than the spa. Room rates drive revenues and supply the spa with customers, so extending it round the site perimeter would expand the area for rooms.

    Thanks for the post.

  2. I think the use of two colors for the model works well. But I agree with Paul. You need to re-evaluate the square footages.
But one major thing you need to take into account is approach. How do you draw people to your building form both land and sea.

  3. Thank you for the feedback, they were very helpful in guiding my through the process. I have made some changes based on your suggestions and implemented them on my next blog post. I still will be making changes to my new model, I believe that I am on the right path.
    Thank you !
